BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman has been sentenced to nine years in prison and his wife Zubaida Rahman to three years imprisonment in a corruption case.
The Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case in 2007. Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Asaduzzaman gave the verdict on Wednesday.
Chief Special Public Prosecutor Mosharraf Hossain Kajol, who is handling the case on behalf of the ACC, confirmed the length of the jail terms. Tarique was also fined Tk3 crore, in default of which he will have to serve three more months in jail.
The court fined Zubaida Tk45 lakh. If she fails to pay the money, she will have to serve one more month in prison.
On July 24, the investigating officer of the case, former deputy director of the ACC Md Towfiqul Islam, testified in court. A total 42 out of 56 witnesses testified in the case.
According to the ACC, no more witnesses will be produced before the court.
