Update : 27 Jul 2023, 06:15 PM

The opposition BNP has claimed that police detained four leaders and activists of the party, over the upcoming Dhaka rally scheduled for Friday.

The arrestees were identified as Madhupur upazila unit BNP President Zakir Hossain, Ghatail upazila Chhatra Dal Convener Nasir Uddin, Dhanbari upazila unit BNP General Secretary Siddiqur Rahman and Kalihati upazila unit BNP member Sona Mia.

Tangail Court Inspector Tanvir Ahmed said: "Zakir Hossain has been arrested in a sabotage case filed in 2022 and sent to the court.”

Later, Chief Judicial Magistrate Court Judge Badal Kumar Chanda placed Zakir Hossain on one-day remand.

In this regard, Tangail district unit BNP General Secretary Farhad Iqbal said police conducted raids in different parts of the district over the BNP's mega rally in Dhaka.

Four people, including Madhapur upazila BNP president, were arrested, he said.

“To foil the rally, the police raided the houses of the leaders and activists so that no one could attend the program. Despite this, about 20,000 leaders and activists from the district have gone to Dhaka to join the rally. They also conduct raids to prevent 40,000 other leaders and activists from going there. Checkpoints are also being set up on roads and highways,” he added.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police has given permission to both the ruling Awami League and the BNP to hold rallies at the south plaza of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque and Naya Paltan, respectively, in Dhaka on Friday.

Both parties have been allowed to hold rallies at their preferred venue on 23 conditions, DMP Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq confirmed on Thursday afternoon.
