Police have detained four more people for their alleged involvement in the murder of Shahidul Islam, president of the Gazipur branch of the Bangladesh Garment and Industrial Workers Federation (BGIWF).
They were held from different areas of Gazipur during a drive conducted by police on Wednesday and Thursday, said Gazipur Industrial Police-2 Additional Superintendent of Police Imran Ahmed.
The detainees have been identified as Shohag, 24, Julhash Ali Rocky, 23, Shahinur Islam Shahin, 21, and Raisul Islam Ratan, 19.
Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq on Thursday said that the visiting US delegation sought a proper investigation into the killing of labour leader Shahidul Islam.
The law minister said: “I clearly told them that Bangladesh has no culture of impunity, justice is ensured upon investigation of any crime in Bangladesh now, and there will be no exception in this case either.”
On Sunday, police arrested three more people in connection with the murder.
On June 25, there were protests among the workers of the Prince Jacquard Sweater Limited factory over the payment of Eid bonuses and arrears.
Labour leader Shahidul Islam, along with companions Mostafa, Sharif, and Akkas, visited the factory in the evening.
On their way back after the discussion, they were attacked and beaten up near the factory by the leaders and workers of the opposing labour organization.
In this violent confrontation, Shahidul Islam, along with four other labour leaders, were injured.
Locals rushed them to the hospital, where doctors declared Shahidul Islam dead.
