Government to introduce plan on women’s role in climate change in 2022

It has become imperative to address women's role in the area of risk management, adaptation and climate resilience, say experts

The government is planning a National Adaptation Plan to uphold women’s contributions in the fight against climate change by June next year, says an official.

Lawmaker Saber Hossain Chowdhury, chair of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, was speaking on the issue at a webinar on Thursday.

He described women’s contributions as a silent but powerful revolution.

The webinar, titled “Rural Women as Climate Actors”, was organized by Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF).

It was focused on issues related to inequality in decision-making and resource allocation for women despite their participation in the rural economy and role in combating food crisis and poverty.

The speakers said it had become imperative to address women's role in the area of risk management, adaptation and climate resilience. 

Alexandra Berg von Linde, the Swedish ambassador in Bangladesh, said: “Bangladesh is a climate vulnerable country. Through different projects, actions need to be taken on Climate Change Survival Strategy to eradicate poverty along with gender development.”

Dr Fazle Rabbi Sadeque Ahmed, deputy managing director of Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF), said there was a need to do advocacy on women in climate change.

Executive Director of MJF Shaheen Anam said: “We have observed that women are powerful agents whose knowledge, skills, and innovative ideas have proved useful in combating the impacts of climate change.” 

Judith Herbertson, development director of British High Commission, Corinne Henchoz Pignani, deputy head of Cooperation of Embassy of Switzerland, KM Tapan Kumar Biswas, director of NGO Affairs Bureau, among others, were present at the program as special guests.
