International Robot Olympiad: Bangladesh wins 4 gold medals

The team also won two silver, five bronze and four technical medals at the event

Bangladesh has won four gold medals in the 23rd International Robot Olympiad. 

In addition, the 16-member team won two silver, five bronze and four technical medals at the event that ran on December 15-16 at BCS Innovation Centre in Dhaka.

This year the International Robot Olympiad competition was held online due to the pandemic. The Olympiad was managed from Daegu, South Korea. 

The theme of this year's International Robot Olympiad was Social Robots.

Lafifa Jamal, president of the Bangladesh Robot Olympiad Committee, said: "We see our boys and girls doing better than ever. Earlier, the competition was dominated by Koreans or other developed countries. Our future generation needs to be very skilled in tackling the Fourth Industrial Revolution. If they retain these skills, they will be able to play an important role in the development of our country.”

The president also mentioned the contribution of the division of Information and Communication Technology and state minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak in making this year’s Olympiad participation a successful one.

“I could concentrate fully on planning and training without worrying about the required funds. Earlier, I had to rush for funding, which cost a lot of energy and time,” Lafifa continued.

The fourth Bangladesh Robot Olympiad 2021 was organized in collaboration with the division of Information and Communication Technology, Dhaka University’s department of Robotix and Mechanical Engineering, Bangladesh Open Source Network and Bangladesh Computer Council. 

Altogether 1,124 students from 64 districts of the country participated in the competition at the national level.

A camp was organized with the winners from the national phase to select the members of the team to participate in the International Olympiad.  

In the junior section, Jaria Musarrat of Robustas team and under the challenge group Rafihat Saleh, Tafsir Tahrim and Mahir Tajwar Chowdhury of Robo Squad team got gold medals under the creative category.

In the junior section of the creative category, Mahruj Mohammad Ayman of Aush team and in the challenge group Mir Umaima Haque and Prapa Haldar of the Wee team under the physical computing category won silver medals.

Rafihat Saleh and Tafsir Tahrim of Robo Squad and Mahir Tajwar Chowdhury of Team-X56 won bronze in the Robot in movie category. 

Kazi Mostahid Labib and Ragib Yasar Rahman and Arefin Anwar of Tiger-71 also won bronze medals.

In the junior section, Misbah Uddin Inan and Jaima Zahin Wara of the Robo Sparkers and in the challenge section Nashitat Zainah Rahman and Kazi Mostahid Labib of the Robotigers team and Ragib Yasar Rahman and Arefin Anwar of the Tiger-61 team got bronze medals in the creative category.

Jaria Musarrat of Robustas team in the junior group and Mir Umaima Haque and Prapa Haldar in the challenge group and Zahra Mahjarin Purbali and Zaiba Mahzabin of the Macro team won technical medals in the Robot in movie category. In the Challenge section, Zahra Mahzarin Purbali and Zaiba Mahzabin of the Macaro team won technical medals in the creative category.

Bangladesh participated in the International Robot Olympiad for the first time in 2018 and won one gold, one technical medal and two highly commended medals.

In 2019, the Bangladesh team won one gold, two silver, and six bronze medals while in 2020, it won two gold, two silver, five bronze and six technical medals.
