Food Minister: Govt to introduce smart cards for food friendly program

The government will introduce smart cards for the vulnerable people under the food friendly program within the next six months.

Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder said while distributing household silos among the poor, for preserving food during natural disasters, at Shibaloy upazila parishad auditorium in Manikganj on Tuesday.

“To ensure transparency and accountability in food distribution under the food friendly program, the government will introduce smart cards for the poor within the next six months,” he said.

Meanwhile, the government has taken an initiative to construct a total of 200 paddy silos across the country.

Regarding government approval of paddy silo construction, the food minister said: “Recently the Ecnec has approved a project for construction of 200 paddy silos which would help to increase stockpile of paddy immediately from the growers to ensure fair price of the food crops.”

The storage capacity of these paddy silos will be 5,000 tons each, he said, adding that with the implementation of the silo construction project, the country’s overall food stock capacity will rise to 3.5 million tons by 2030.

Praising the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the food minister said there was no food crisis in the country due to prudent leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during the global coronavirus pandemic.

“Bangladesh has successfully overcome the situation, even though no one had died due to shortage of food,” he added.

Referring to the imminent national election, he said those who will not take part in the upcoming elections should be punished before the court established by the cross section of people.

Terming the BNP as the killer of democracy, Majumder said those who have tried to kill the democracy have automatically been boycotted by the people. “The ruling Awami League has never escaped from the polls,” he told the function.

Chaired by Deputy Commissioner of Manikganj Muhammad Abdul Latif, the program was attended, among others, by AM Naimur Rahman MP, Mamtaz Begum MP, Director General of the Department of Food Sheikh Mujibur Rahman,Additional Secretary M Kurshid Iqbal Rejvi and other local leaders.

To mark the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, a total of 300,000 family silos will be distributed among 55 upazilas under 23 districts across the country.

In Manikganj, a total of 13,000 silos will be distributed in phases among the vulnerable families at three upazilas where each family can preserve 40kg paddy or 56kg rice or 70 litres of drinking water in every silos during the natural calamities.
