Continuous heavy rain over the past few days in the highlands and within the country has been causing the water levels of rivers to rise, raising concerns of flash flooding in the low-lying regions of Bangladesh.
According to the weather forecast by Bangladesh Meteorological Department on Friday, the rain is expected to continue intermittently over the next few days.
The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) has reported a rise in water levels of all major rivers in the northeast of the country.
According to BMD, the forecast for the next 72 hours predicts moderately heavy to heavy falls in the northeast and highlands.
As a result, several rivers in the region, such as the Surma, Kushiyara, Jadukata, Shari-Goyain, and Someshwari, could experience a rapid rise in water levels, possibly causing flash flooding in some low-lying areas of Sylhet, Sunamganj, and Netrokona districts.
The Tista River at Dalia point could also reach dangerous levels in the next 24 hours.
However, the Brahmaputra-Jamuna and Padma rivers are witnessing a decrease in water levels.
On the other hand, the Ganges River maintains a stable level, which could remain unchanged for the next 48 hours.
Partha Pratim Barua, an official from the FFWC, said that heavy rain in the highlands is causing the rivers in the northeastern region of the country to rise. If the rainfall continues progressively, it could lead to flash flooding in the low-lying areas of Sylhet and Sunamganj.
The weather forecast for the next 24 hours predicts light to moderate showers, occasionally accompanied by thunderstorms, in most areas of the Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, and Sylhet divisions, and the several regions of Khulna, Barisal, and Chittagong divisions.
Alongside this, parts of the country could experience moderate to heavy downpours.
The highest rainfall in the last 24 hours was recorded in Chittagong, at 138 millimetres.
