A nor'wester that swept across the northern region of Barisal early Thursday left an elderly man dead and a fisherman missing, and caused significant damage to several homes.
Sheikh Mohammad Rajit Bihari, 75, from Radhimahal village in Charbaria union, died after a Chambal tree fell on his house during the storm, crushing him in his sleep.
His wife and two sons, also in the house at the time, managed to escape unharmed.
Simultaneously, 18-year-old fisherman Masud Rari of Charkilla village in Hizla upazila went missing during the storm.
His father, who was fishing with him at the time, was rescued by other fishermen and is currently receiving treatment at Hijla Upazila Health Complex for injuries sustained during the incident.
According to Pranab Kumar Roy, a senior observer at the Barisal meteorological office, the storm struck the region around 6:55am, bringing with it heavy rain and winds with speeds of up to 46 kilometres per hour.
During this period, 29.6 millimetres of rain fell, he added.
Abid Hasan, Hizla upazila project implementation officer, reported widespread damage in the wake of the storm.
At least 25 houses were destroyed, and numerous trees within the upazila were uprooted, the project implementation officer said.
A hospital ground also suffered considerable damage, with a fallen tree overturning an ambulance and disrupting the hospital's air conditioning system, he said.
The storm also damaged a power line, resulting in a local power outage, he added.
