Flash floods feared in Sylhet, Sunamganj as rivers swell up

Sylhet may witness heavy to very heavy rainfall in next 24 hours

Update : 15 Jun 2023, 09:51 PM

The low-lying areas of Sylhet and Sunamganj district may witness flash floods, as the water levels of the major rivers of the region are witnessing a sharp rise.

The met office in its forecast on Thursday said it might rain along with thundershowers in Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and in Dhaka, Barisal and Chittagong divisions. It also predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Sylhet in the 24 hours to 6pm on Friday.

“The major rivers of this region -- Surma, Kushiyara, Manu, Khowai, Sarigowain, Jhalukhali, Bhugai-Kangsha, Someswari, Jadukata -- may rise rapidly and create a short-term flood situation in the low-lying areas of Sylhet and Sunamganj,” according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre's Thursday bulletin.

The forecast further reads that the Brahmaputra, Jamuna and Padma rivers are in a rising trend, while the Ganges River is in a steady trend, which may continue in the next 72 hours.

“Due to heavy rainfall forecast in the Teesta-Dharla basin and adjoining upstream region in the next 24 hours, these rivers may rise rapidly at times,” the bulletin adds.
