Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi revealed that every day 170 million people in Bangladesh consume 170 million cups of tea.
He made this statement during the National Tea Day event held at Moulvibazar Sreemangal BTRI High School ground on Sunday afternoon.
The minister said: "Tea is the most beloved beverage in our country. Our tea production is growing by 5-7% annually. However, as the production falls short of the people's demand, we are unable to export tea."
Dhaka Tribune"Similar to the Father of the Nation, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is also dedicated to the welfare of tea workers. The tea industry faced labour wage-related issues for many years, but the prime minister personally resolved this problem. She played a pivotal role in compelling plantation owners to increase the daily minimum wages of workers from Tk120 to Tk170, and she has undertaken various measures for the welfare of tea workers," he added.
Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi further stated: "Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman assumed the role of Bengali chairman of the Tea Board on June 4, 1957. During his tenure, a research station was established which tirelessly works for the development of the tea industry. After independence, he dedicated himself to the growth of the tea industry in the country."
Dhaka TribuneDuring the event, Tipu Munshi presented awards in eight categories to individuals and organizations for their exceptional contributions to the country's tea industry.
This was the third celebration of "National Tea Day", declared by the Cabinet meeting on July 20, 2020, in honour of the contributions of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to the tea industry, marking the date of his appointment as the chairman of the Tea Board. The day was first celebrated in 2021, followed by 2022, and this year marked the third commemoration.
