OIC chief for dignified, sustainable Rohingya repatriation

Taha highlights commitment to ensuring the completion of the Rohingya genocide trial at the ICJ

Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Secretary General Hissein Brahim Taha has said his organization is seeking a lasting solution to the Rohingya issue and has always made diplomatic efforts to secure a dignified and sustainable repatriation of the Rohingyas in Bangladesh.

He said this while engaging in a dialogue with a Rohingya delegation at Cox's Bazar's Ukhiya camp on Monday afternoon. 

The OIC secretary general highlighted commitment to ensuring the completion of the Rohingya genocide trial initiated by the Gambia government against the Myanmar military junta at the International Court of Justice.

During the constructive discussion, the Rohingya delegation presented their concerns to the OIC chief, emphasizing their legitimate demands such as ethnic recognition, citizenship, security, the restoration of their land, and the imperative completion of the Rohingya genocide trial.

Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner Mohammad Mizanur Rahman said the delegation led by the OIC secretary general had a productive encounter with a Rohingya delegation. 

Additionally, they also conducted an extensive assessment of the educational initiatives being undertaken in the camp.

The OIC chief arrived at Cox's Bazar on Monday morning and went to Kutupalong Extension Camp in Ukhiya.

The OIC chief also visited Brac's Youth Center and participated a tree plantation program and various charity activities during his visit. 

Taha met with the Refugee Affairs Commission, Rohingya representatives, NGO INGO representatives. 

He will return to Dhaka by air in the afternoon.

Additional members of Armed Police Battalion (APBn) has been deployed around the Rohingya camps during the OIC chief's visit to tighten the security .

Earlier, he landed in Dhaka on a five-day visit on Saturday morning. 

Later, the OIC secretary general had a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen.

During his meeting with the prime minister, the OIC chief said Rohingya is a priority issue for the OIC, adding: "Rohingyas are deprived of their rights.”

He also addressed the 35th convocation of the Islamic University of Technology (IUT).
