Preparation for earthquakes holds greater significance than post-earthquake rescue operations, stated Prof Dr Syed Humayun Akhter, vice chancellor of Bangladesh Open University (BOU).

He made these remarks during a seminar titled "Resilience Talk: Earthquake Risk in Bangladesh: Awareness and Preparedness," organized by Gender Responsive Resilience and Intersectionality in Policy and Practice (GRRIPP) South Asia at Dhaka University on Thursday, says a press release.

During his speech, Prof Dr Syed Humayun Akhter highlighted the importance of earthquake drills in raising awareness about disaster preparedness.

He suggested that engaging mobile games could be employed to educate children and their parents on various disasters, including earthquakes.

As an esteemed seismologist, Humayun shared practical strategies for managing earthquake risks based on his extensive experience.

Dr Mahbuba Nasreen, the vice chancellor (education) of Bangladesh Open University and GRRIPP regional lead, as well as co-founder of Dhaka University Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies (IDMVS), delivered a welcome speech at the seminar.

She stressed the significance of the event, advocating for earthquake awareness and preparedness while urging participants to transcend gender boundaries in disaster risk reduction and promote universal early warning systems.

During the seminar, students from IDMVS shared their thoughts, experiences, and insights on earthquake-related issues beyond what is covered in textbooks, providing a contemporary perspective on earthquake trends.
