A Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader succumbed to his gunshot wound and another sustained injuries following a clash between two groups within the organization in Narsingdi Sadar upazila on Thursday.
The deceased leader of Chhatra Dal, the BNP's student wing, was identified as Sadekur Rahman, 35. The injured activist, Ashraful, 22, is undergoing treatment.
Both of them were initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in critical condition.
Sadekur was declared dead by the attending doctor at 7:15pm, confirmed Inspector Md Bacchu Mia, in charge of DMCH police outpost.
A 71-member committee of Chhatra Dal's district unit was announced around four months back. Several clashes occurred between the office bearers of the newly formed committee and those who were not given posts, reports UNB.
The deprived Chhatra Dal men brought out a procession, in favour of a district BNP program scheduled to be held on May 27 near the house of BNP Joint Secretary General Khairul Kabir Khokan in the Chinishpur area of Narsingdi Sadar upazila around 3:45pm.
Suddenly, a group of Chhatra Dal opened fire on the procession, said Mayeen Uddin, a former joint convenor and post-deprived member of the organization.
Sadek was shot in his forehead and Ashraful in his thigh, he said, adding that they were first rushed to an area hospital and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital due to their critical condition.
Kashem, officer-in-charge of Narsingdi Sadar police station, said the situation is now under their control and additional law enforces have been deployed to ward off any further unexpected incidents.
Legal action will be taken once complaints are lodged in this connection, he added.
