Jatiya Party (JaPa) nominee Nazrul Islam Babul has accused Awami League nominated mayoral candidate Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury of violating the code of conduct in the Sylhet City Corporation election.

He also accused Sylhet election office officials of biased behaviour.

In a press release signed by Sylhet Metropolitan JaPa Member Secretary Abdus Shahid Lashkar Bashir, on Wednesday, Nazrul Islam Babul, convener of the Jatiya Party nominated mayor candidate for Central JaPa, Sylhet Metropolitan branch, said that on Tuesday, hundreds of Awami League leaders including top leaders present during the submission of nomination papers of the boat symbol candidate broke the electoral code of conduct and submitted the nomination papers to the Election Commission office.

Expressing concern in this regard, he said that photos of that scene has been published and circulated in national, local newspapers and electronic media, proving that Sylhet Regional Election Commission office is not neutral.

“So, as a Jatiya Party candidate, I feel that the election will not be fair. I am apprehensive about the violation of the code of conduct of candidates for the election,” he added.

In the press release, he expressed his apprehension and said: “In this situation, I think the Election Commission will be under the complete control of the government party candidate during the election period and till the election day. If this continues, I will be forced to take a difficult decision as a Jatiya Party candidate. Sylhet Regional Election Commission will be fully responsible for this. I once again strongly demand Sylhet Election Office to keep the electoral environment fair and neutral.”
