Each city corporation will have eight of these temporary markets

Update : 11 May 2023, 09:41 PM

Sixteen makeshift cattle markets are set to be established across the two city corporations in Dhaka ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, one of the two major festivals of Muslims.

The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) will each get eight markets.

Besides these temporary markets, sacrificial animals will also be sold at the permanent markets in Gabtoli in the north and Sarulia in the south of the capital.

Tenders have already been floated for the leasing of the 16 designated locations.

The leases are expected to be finalized by the middle of May.

However, the authorities can cancel any market from the list or add new ones if they want, as stated in the tender.

On May 2, the DNCC invited tenders for eight animal markets. According to the tenders, the temporary markets under the DNCC will be located at Uttara Diabari sectors 16 and 18 near Bou Bazar, the Eastern Housing area in Mirpur Section 6, the open space from B to H blocks in Aftabnagar of Badda, the open space adjacent to Saidnagar in Vatara, the Bosila area of Mohammadpur, the playground of Dhaka Polytechnic Institute, the vacant area near Kaola Shiyaldanga, and Rahman Nagar Residential Area in Ward 44.

Prior to this, on April 27, the DSCC invited tenders for seven animal markets. As per the tender, the makeshift animal markets under the DSCC will be located at the vacant areas of Postogola cremation ground, Institute of Leather Technology ground, Meradia Bazar, Little Friends Club, Kamalapur Stadium, Dania College in Jatrabari, Dholaikhal Truck Stand, near Rahmatganj Club in Lalbagh and Amulia Model Town.

Later, on April 30, the DSCC invited another tender for an additional animal market in the vacant area adjacent to Amulia Model Town.

According to a source at the DNCC, these makeshift markets will be leased for a total of five days, including the day of Eid-ul-Azha.

Alongside the sale of animals at these markets, the Dhaka North City Corporation is placing special emphasis on digital markets, similar to last year.

In the digital market, farms approved by e-CAB and Bangladesh Dairy Farmers Association (BDFA) will be able to sell their animals.
