Mohammed Shahabuddin has taken oath as the 22nd president of Bangladesh on Monday.
He succeeded Md Abdul Hamid, whose tenure ended on Sunday.
Shahabuddin took the presidential oath administered by Parliament Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury at the historic Durbar Hall of Bangabhaban at 11am in the presence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, cabinet members, and hundreds of distinguished guests.
Cabinet Secretary Md Mahbub Hossain conducted the program.
After the swearing-in ceremony, Mohammed Shahabuddin signed the oath documents for the office of the president.
Outgoing President Md Abdul Hamid congratulated the newly elected His Excellency President Md Sahabuddin PMOFamily members of the new president, including his wife Dr Rebecca Sultana and son Arshad Adnan Rony were present at the function.
Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, members of parliament, the chief election commissioner, Supreme Court judges, political leaders, chiefs of the three military forces, diplomats, senior journalists, including editors, and high-ranking civil and military officials witnessed the event.
Earlier, the 73-year-old politician was elected as the 22nd president of Bangladesh on February 13.
Early life, politics and career
Mohammed Shahabuddin was born on December 10, 1949 in Shibrampur's Jubilee Tank area in Pabna town. His father's name is Sharfuddin Ansari and his mother Khairunnessa.
Obtaining his MSc degree from Rajshahi University in 1974, he later cleared LLB and BCS (Law) examinations.
The president-elect was the general secretary of Pabna Edward College Chhatra League, president of Pabna Chhatra League and Jubo League later. He was the joint secretary of the Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League's (Baksal) district unit and publicity secretary of the Awami League's district chapter.

He was the frontline movement organizer of Pabna and raised protests soon after the brutal incident on August 15, 1975. Subsequently, he was imprisoned for three years and subjected to inhuman torture by the then-military dictators.
Mohammed Shahabuddin was also involved in journalism (Dainik Banglar Bani), and a good number of his articles were also published in different vernaculars.
During his career, he served as a district and sessions judge and an Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) commissioner. He also served as director of the Prime Minister's Office and the coordinator assigned to the law ministry in the Bangabandhu murder case.

Father of the Nation Bangabandhu's youngest daughter Sheikh Rehana was present at the time PMOMohammed Shahabuddin was elected secretary general of the BCS (Judiciary) Association twice in a row. After retirement from service, he was engaged in the legal profession in the High Court.
He later served as chairman of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry in the investigation into the 2001 post-election violence.
As an ACC commissioner, Mohammed Shahabuddin proved his firmness in dealing with the so-called corruption plot against the Padma Bridge project.
A former student leader, Mohammed Shahabuddin also served as a member of the Awami League's Advisory Council and chairman of the party's Publicity and Publication Subcommittee.
