Film Artistes' Association General Secretary Nipun has said that the association can not do much over its member Dhallywood actor Mahiya Mahi's arrest on Saturday.
Nipun said: “Actually, it is a state matter. Law enforcement forces filed a complaint against him. I don't understand what we can do organizationally. Because the law is above all.”
She, however, urged the authorities to ensure proper wellbeing of Mahi, who is now eight months pregnant.
Nipun said: “We are not law experts. Law enforcement agencies understand it well. I don't want to talk about it (Mahi's arrest). I only want to talk about my artist, Mahi. Since she has been sent to jail, she should be given proper security.”
Meanwhile. several producers and actors including Jaya Ahsan, Redwan Roni, Shihab Shaheen, and Ashfaq Nipun, have already condemned the arrest of Mahi.
Mahiya Mahi was arrested in a case filed under the Digital Security Act for allegedly tarnishing the image of the Gazipur Metropolitan Police.
The Gazipur Metropolitan Police arrested her at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at around 11:45am on Saturday, Deputy Police Commissioner Abu Torab Md Shamsur Rahman said.
The actor had been in Saudia Arabia with her husband, Rakib Sarker, to perform Umrah, the police officer said.
Rakib, who is the joint general secretary of the Awami League's Bason unit in Gazipur, did not return home with Mahi.
A GMP team had been positioned at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport since dawn as the unit had learnt that the actor was returning home from Saudia Arabia, GMP Detective Branch Deputy Commissioner Ibrahim Hossain said.
Earlier, two separate cases were filed against Mahiya Mahi and Rakib Sarker at Gazipur's Bason police station on charges of land grabbing and tarnishing the image of the police.
Rokon Miah, sub-inspector at Bason police station under the Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP), filed one case on Friday night under the Digital Security Act (DSA), accusing the couple of impairing the law order situation by spreading false, fabricated, defamatory and attacking information with the intention of defamation.
