Cyber Police Centre of CID arrested five alleged members of an organized syndicate involved in making fake birth and death registration certificates by illegal intrusion into BDRIS (Birth & Death Registration Information System) server.
The arrestees were identified as Md Mahbub Ali,24, Md Shah Alam, 25, Md Hasan Tarek,47, vaccinator Kohinoor Sultana,45 and Md Faisal, 19.
Several birth certificates, eight files with fake documents for making birth certificates, three hard disk and four mobile phones were seized from their possessions.
Cyber Police Center of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been carrying out regular cyber patrolling and monitoring in the cyber space of Bangladesh and have also taken necessary legal measures to eliminate and prevent any crime.
The Cyber Police Centre got a complaint from Md Rashedul Islam, registrar general, Directorate of Birth and Death Registration, on February 7.
In his complaint, he mentioned that someone has been preparing fake birth and death registration certificate by hacking into the birth and death registration server of BDRIS (Birth & Death Registration Information System) illegally.
Based on the complaint, the Cyber Police Center (CPC) started investigation into the matter and identified a Facebook group called “Birth Registration Help Desk” where they are saying: "Collect the birth/death certificate of any district of the country within one day.”
The CPC identified the group who contacted the victim about the birth registration along with the admin of the Facebook group.
Then, Cyber Intelligence and Risk Management Branch conducted an operation at Pallabi in Dhaka and arrested two admins of the Facebook group identified as Md Mahbub Ali and Md Shah Alam, recently.
Later, according to their confession, two Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) employees - sprayman Md Hasan Tarek and vaccinator Kohinoor Sultana were arrested.
During their arrest, Md Faisal, a member of this syndicate came to submit files with fake documents for birth registration to Md Hasan Tarek, was also arrested
Although the government fee for birth registration is only Tk50, they used to take Tk550 to Tk1000 for each fake certificate.
Various identity cards including NIDs and passports are being issued on this fake birth registration certificate which is an extreme threat to national security, said a senior officer of the CID.
The officer requesting anonymity also said that a case has been registered against the accused under Digital Security Act at Paltan police station recently.
