A Bagerhat court on Saturday sent 30 BNP leaders and activists to jail in a sabotage case.

Bagerhat Senior Judicial Magistrate Court Judge Belal Hossain ordered the arrestees to be sent to jail.

The arrested BNP leaders include Central Assistant Publicity Secretary Shamimur Rahman Shamim, district unit BNP's former president MA Salam, its incumbent Convener ATM Akram Hossain Selim Talim, and another leader Ali Robi, and others.

Earlier, a case was filed against 48 named BNP leaders and activists, and some 30-40 unnamed individuals by Sub-Inspector (SI) Syed Abu Sufian of the Bagerhat Sadar police outpost.

Police said that they received information that the Bagerhat district unit BNP leaders were planning to create chaos, and were armed with local weapons during their road march scheduled for Saturday.

On Saturday, Md Asaduzzaman, superintendent of police in the district, said they had detained some 20-25 BNP men and seized weapons and cocktails.

Protesting the incident, BNP Central Committee Education Affairs Secretary ABM Dr Obaidul Islam claimed that police detained at least 30 leaders and activists from different areas during “peaceful” road march in the district.
