A deliveryman from Gazipur has been arrested for blackmailing several women and teenagers after hacking their Google Photos and threatening to post their private photos online.
The 22-year-old, Mizanur Rahman alias Al Amin, was arrested on Friday from the Rothkhola area, Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Deputy Commissioner (Crime) Abu Torab Md. Shamsur Rahman told reporters at a press briefing on Saturday.
Mizanur Rahman worked for an online shopping website, the official said. He was sent to jail on Saturday after a case was filed against him under the Digital Security Act.
He added that Mizanur used to target young women during delivery. He used to ask for their phones saying he would update their home address in Google Maps.
However, after taking the phone, Mizanur would go to the women's Google Photos, and add his own email address to the “Share with partner” option. In this way, he gained access to all the women's photos stored on their phones.
Mizanur later blackmailed the women by downloading their private photos. Those who refused to pay were blackmailed that the private pictures would be posted online.
At least 11 email IDs of other women were found logged into Mizanur's mobile phone.
In this regard, a man, whose daughter was being blackmailed, said that Mizanur threatened them that he would post the woman's private pictures online if they refused to pay.
The man added that his daughter tried to commit suicide several times after the incident. She also broke down mentally and quit her studies due to shame and embarrassment.
