Voicing his deep concern over the vandalizing of 14 idols at 12 Hindu temples in Thakurgaon's Baliadangi upazila, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday demanded an impartial investigation to find the perpetrators immediately.
In a statement, he said: "This incident is not only outrageous but also mysterious, premeditated, and disgraceful. There is no suitable word to condemn it."
Stating that Bangladesh is a shining example of communal harmony, the BNP leader said those who want to destroy communal and social harmony by vandalizing temples and idols of the Hindu community are vermin from hell.
At the same time, he urged the administration to be careful so that no innocent person is harassed due to political vengeance in connection with the incident.
Unidentified people vandalized 14 idols at 12 Hindu temples at three unions under Baliadangi upazila in Thakurgaon district in the early hours of Sunday.
On Sunday, Thakurgaon Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md Mahbubur Rahman said stern action will be taken against those involved in the vandalizing of the idols.
He also termed the attacks on temples heinous acts and said those who are carrying out evil acts to create unrest in the land of peace and communal harmony will be brought to justice soon.
Upazila Puja Celebration Parishad General Secretary Vidyanath Burman on Sunday said a group of unidentified miscreants carried out the attack on Saturday night.
Later in the morning, DC Mahbubur Rahman, Superintendent of Police Mohammad Jahangir Hossain and Hindu Buddhist Christian Oikya Parishad Thakurgaon District General Secretary Prabir Kumar Gupta visited the spot.
Mohammad Jahangir Hossain said: “We are trying to identify those involved in the incident. The truth will be revealed after investigations.”
Kashinath Singh, a resident of Sindurpindi area, said: “We are in a state of panic. Those involved in this incident should be arrested quickly.”
