Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists vandalized the office of the Chittagong University (CU) vice chancellor on Monday, for not recruiting their preferred candidate as a teacher.

Some BCL activists vandalized chairs, tables, crockery items and several flower tubs over dissatisfaction with the appointment of teachers, said Assistant Proctor SAM Ziaul Islam.

"We went to the spot and brought the situation under control," he added. However, the campus shuttle train service remains suspended as the train key was seized, Ziaul Islam said.

Sources at the university said a faction led by the CU unit BCL vice president, Moynul Islam Russel, was behind the hooliganism. Talking to UNB, Russell hardly denied the claim.

Russel, who is the leader of the Ekakar Group, one of the two factions of BCL within the unit, said they were protesting the appointment of 'an anti-government candidate' as a teacher. He also said: "Until the appointment of anti-government activists is revoked, we will continue our protest."

The incident took place on Monday afternoon after the 541st Syndicate meeting of the University, where various recruitment decisions were made.
