Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said the police are lauded everywhere for their commitment to standing by the people, sometimes even at the risk of their lives, during different crises.
Sheikh Hasina was speaking at the graduation ceremony of the 38th BCS Cadre apprentice assistant superintendents of police at the Bangladesh Police Academy in Rajshahi's Sardah on Sunday, ahead of a rally of her party, the Awami League, in the city.
Calling upon the police force to work to gain the trust of the people, the prime minister said the police had played a huge role in protecting the independence and sovereignty of the country, and fighting militancy.
“The police force should gain public confidence. People's help is necessary to deal with any disaster, fight terrorism or do any work. The police have to gain the trust of the people with their professionalism and compassion so that everyone is reassured to have the police by their side in any danger.”
“May this progress of Bangladesh continue. I want to take the country forward by delivering the benefits of freedom to the people of Bangladesh imbued with the spirit of the Liberation War, and you have to fulfil your responsibilities properly for that,” Sheikh Hasina said.
Sheikh Hasina, also president of the ruling Awami League, is scheduled to address a rally in Rajshahi city for the first time in five years.
