Local Awami League leaders and activists on Friday declared former BNP lawmaker Rumeen Farhana as unwanted in Sarail and Ashuganj areas during the by-polls to Brahmanbaria-2 constituency.

District Awami League General Secretary Al Mamun Sarkar made the announcement and said people will take action if she is seen in the area during polls.

The decision came following a meeting of the party at Ashuganj upazila unit office on Friday.

He told Dhaka Tribune that the BNP leader is not contesting the by-polls scheduled for February 1. Still, she has recently made some provocative statements.

Local Awami League leaders and activists will thwart any attempt to destabilize the situation in Brahmanbaria ahead of the by-polls, he said.

The Brahmanbaria-2 seat fell vacant after former BNP lawmaker Abdus Sattar resigned from Parliament as per party decision.  A few days later, he submitted his resignation as the BNP chairperson's adviser and collected nomination papers in defiance of the party decision.

On January 14, three Awami League leaders withdrew their candidature. Four days later, former lawmaker and expelled leader of Jatiya Party Ziaul Haque Mridha also withdrew his candidacy.
