Residents and the Noakhali district unit Awami League have been celebrating since Obaidul Quader was made the general secretary of the party for the third consecutive term on Saturday.
The district unit Awami League leaders and activists reportedly started gathering at the party office after Obaidul Quader's name was announced at the 22nd national council held in Dhaka.
They also distributed sweets among themselves and the residents, reports Bangla Tribune.
The ruling party men also took out several processions around the district.
Samsuddin Noman, general secretary of Basurhat unit Jubo League, said: "I congratulated Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on behalf of the upazila residents for electing our leader Obaidul Quader as the general secretary of Awami League for the third term."
On October 23, 2016, at the 20th conference of Awami League, Obaidul Quader was elected as the general secretary of the party for 2016-2019 term.

In the 21st national council conference on December 21, 2019, he was re-elected as general secretary for the second time.
Earlier on Saturday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was re-elected as the Awami League president, and Obaidul Quader was re-elected as party general secretary.
With this, Sheikh Hasina has been re-elected as the party chief for the 10th consecutive term, and Obaidul Quader has been re-elected as the general secretary for the third time.
The Election Commission of the party announced the names in the second session of the 22nd national council at Engineers Institution.
Party President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the second session of the conference at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) in the capital at 3pm on Saturday.
About 7,000 councillors from all over the country are participating in the council session.
