An awami league leader was killed on Saturday in a deadly road crash while on his way to the 22nd national council of Awami League from Shibchar in Madaripur.
The deceased Bajlur Rahman, 40, was the organizing secretary of Shibchar Bhadrasan Union Awami League unit.
He breathed his last at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Saturday afternoon while undergoing treatment.
According to local and party sources, leaders and activists of Shibchar Upazila Awami League and affiliated organizations left for Dhaka in a few buses, microbuses and private vehicles to attend the council at the historical Suhrawardy Udyan on Saturday morning.
On the way, at around 9am, a private car carrying the activists was at the toll plaza of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Highway on Dhaka-Mawa Expressway when a Taj Anondo Paribahan bus hit it from behind and the car was overturned.
At that time, Bajlur Rahman and four other activists were critically injured. Later fire service and police rescued them and sent them to DMCH.
Shibchar Bhadrasan Union Awami League unit General Secretary Ripon Madbar said: “In politics, Bajlur was a bright and effective figurehead. His passing caused much suffering for our group. This void will not be filled easily.”
