His son was also shown arrested in the same case on November 9

Update : 13 Dec 2022, 05:20 PM

The arrested Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has been shown arrested in a case lodged under Anti-Terrorism Act with the capital's Jatrabari Police Station.

CTTC chief Md Asaduzzaman told the media in a press conference at DMP media center at Minto Road around 3:30 pm on Tuesday.

His son Rafat Sadik Saifullah was also shown arrested in the case on November 9. Rafat was arrested from Sylhet along with his associate.

The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested Dr Shafiqur Rahman from his residence at the Basundhara area in the capital early Tuesday, said the CTTC chief.

Three members of the new militant organization ‘Jamatul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya' were arrested from Jatrabari. They revealed the name of Doctor Rafat Sadik during interrogation, said Asaduzzaman.

In June 2021, his son Rafat returned from militant training after talking to Doctor Shafiqur Rahman. Later Rafat brought back his associates from Chittagong to Sylhet and Dhaka. However, at the house in Sylhet, Rafat used to do militant works with his other associates at various times. Shafiqur Rahman knew about this, said the CTTC chief.

The CTTC chief also claimed that his father Shafiqur Rahman had the support behind Rafat's going to the Kukichin camp in the remote hilly area of Bandarban. He has been arrested for his involvement in the matter. But till now it is not known whether the militants have any connection with Jamaat, he said adding: “we are trying to find out”.

Acting secretary general of Jamaat ATM Masum in a statement claimed the arrest was made around 1am from Dr Shafiqur's residence in the capital.

He condemned and protested the arrest, reports UNB.

He said the government cannot stop the ongoing political protests in the country through such arrests. “The people's movement cannot be stopped by creating fear, attack and filing cases,” he said in his statement.

Masum urged the authority to immediately give unconditional release of arrested Jamaat leaders including Shafiqur and leaders of other political parties.

On December 11, the Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami announced a 10-point demand largely overlapping with the BNP's, and declared a mass rally on December 24 just after the BNP's announcement.

Jamaat-e-Islami made the announcement to build a nationwide simultaneous mass movement based on the 10-point demand to restore democracy in the country and bring back the people's rights, said a media statement.
