Gopalganj Liberation Day Wednesday

‘We take pride in recalling the grim memories of battlefields and glorious tales of heroism on this day every year,’ says a local freedom fighter

Update : 07 Dec 2022, 01:48 PM

On this day in 1971, Gopalganj, the home district of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was liberated from the Pakistani occupation forces.

It was a day of glory for the freedom fighters of Gopalganj. The day is still memorable for the residents of Gopalganj.

On this day, as the sun rose, freedom fighters from different areas divided themselves into groups and entered the city, raising a dark green flag with a blood-red sun emblazoned on the map of Bangladesh.

When the Pakistani soldiers heard about India recognizing Bangladesh on December 6 and that freedom fighters were forming an attack from all sides, they fled the mini cantonment office (currently the office of the upazila nirbahi officer) on the bank of Joy Bangla Pond next to Gopalganj Sadar Thana Parishad.

When the news spread that the Pak Army had fled the city and the freedom fighters were coming towards the city, the locals were filled with joy. They came out to welcome the freedom fighters.

Vice President of Gopalganj District Awami League and freedom fighter Sikder Nur Mohammad Dulu said: “We came down to fight the invaders by responding to the call of Bangabandhu. We had face-to-face battles with Pakistani forces at 25 places. Finally, on December 6, the Pakistani army fled the mini cantonment and we liberated Gopalganj on December 7.”

“We take pride in recalling the grim memories of battlefields and glorious tales of heroism on this day every year,” he added.
