Waterkeepers Bangladesh organizes boat race to protect Balu River

Various programs will be organized in the Balu River festival scheduled for Saturday

Waterkeepers Bangladesh consortium and Barogram residents jointly organized a boat race on Friday in Itakhola, Trimohoni, Khaligaon areas as part of the Balu River festival.

Various programs will be organized in the Balu River festival which is scheduled to be held on Saturday.

Sharmeen Murshid, executive director of Brotee, a non-government organization, and also a member of the National River Conservation Commission, inaugurated the boat race, said a press release.

She said: "Our aim is to protect the river amidst the joy of the festival." 

“People used to drink the water from the Balu River, but the water here now is as black as night,” said Sharif Jamil, coordinator of Waterkeepers Bangladesh.

“We hope to de-pollute the Balu River by raising awareness through this event,” he added.

Akbar Hossain, a councilor for the Dhaka South City Corporation, said that boat races were a part of Bangladesh's culture earlier, but now it is not organized as much due to river pollution. 

This event is therefore being arranged to raise public awareness about river contamination, he added.

Sharif Jamli, the coordinator of Waterkeepers Bangladesh, announced the end of the program by thanking everyone.
