RMG workers to besiege labour ministry on November 30 for wage hike

National Garment Workers Federation will submit a memorandum to minister

Update : 25 Nov 2022, 07:15 PM

The National Garment Workers Federation (NGWF) has demanded to fix salary of readymade garments (RMG) workers considering the rising commodity prices amid the current global economic situation.

The federation has announced that it will besiege the Ministry of Labour and Employment and submit a memorandum to the minister on November 30, reports Bangla Tribune.

President of the organization, Amirul Haque Amin, made this announcement at a press conference organized at National Press Club on Friday.

Amirul Haque said in a written statement: “The last wage of the garment workers was announced in December 2018.”

At present, commodity price hike, inflation, gas-electricity-water price hike, house rent, transportation fare and medical expenses have increased. But the wages of 4 million garment workers in the country have not changed. Therefore, determining the reasonable wages of workers has now become necessary, he said in the statement.

"Already the salary of the government employees has been increased and discussions are going on to increase the salary again. Wages of workers in other industrial sectors have also been increased. But the unfortunate thing is that the wages of garment workers, who earn 87% of the country's foreign exchange, have not been increased even today,” said the workers leader.

Letters have already been given to the state minister for labour and employement, and related parties for increasing the wages of garment workers and forming a wage board, he said.
