Chhatra League leader Diaz murder probe still in limbo after 6 years

Family members have expressed frustration over the investigation's slow pace

Update : 20 Nov 2022, 01:26 PM

The mystery behind the murder of Diaz Irfan Chowdhury, the former joint secretary of the Chittagong University unit Bangladesh Chhatra League unit, and assistant secretary of the central Chhatra League, has not been solved even after six years.

The victim's family members have expressed frustration with the sluggish progress of the investigation, which is being carried out by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The Investigation officer of the case, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Chittagong unit CID, Abdus Salam Mia said: “We are still investigating the case. It is not clear when the investigation will be completed. However, we have made progress.”

Diaz's elder sister, Jubaida Sarwar Chowdhury Nipa, told Bangla Tribune: "The case filed in connection with the murder of my younger brother Diaz has been under investigation for the last six years. The investigating agency is not able to say when the investigation will be completed.”

She added that the investigating officer of the case has changed several times, but there has been no progress.

“CID is not serious about investigating this case. The accused are roaming around freely in public,” she added.

On November 20, 2016, the body of Diaz was found hanging from the ceiling of his room near Chittagong University.

Four days later, Diaz's mother filed a murder case against 10 named and 10 unnamed accused.

Although a first autopsy conducted at Chittagong Medical College Hospital had concluded that he had committed suicide by hanging himself, a second autopsy at Dhaka Medical College Hospital determined that he had been murdered by strangulation.

Diaz's family members and associates in Chhatra League claim he was murdered by his rivals over tender manipulation.
