DB chief: BNP men mugging people to attend rallies

He was referring to a group of thieves arrested on Wednesday

Update : 10 Nov 2022, 09:45 PM

BNP activists and workers are now mugging people to meet the expenses of participating in the ongoing rallies of the party in different districts of Bangladesh, Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) chief Mohammad Harun-Ur-Rashid has said.

He was referring to a group of thieves arrested for stealing mobile phones on Wednesday.

“I am not claiming this because I want to humiliate or blame anyone. When the arrestees were asked, they said they were involved in politics,” Harun-Ur-Rashid said during a press conference on Thursday in Dhaka.

The officer further claimed that the group is involved with BNP even though they do not have a fixed post in the party.

When asked whether this group was attending any other party's mass rallies, the officer replied that the group only attended BNP programs.

He said: “They stole 18 mobile phones on their way back from BNP's mass rally in Barisal. However, whether the recovered mobile phones were stolen in Dhaka or not will be known during interrogation.”

Earlier on Wednesday, DB arrested a five-member gang during a raid in the capital.

The arrestees are - Harun alias Anisuzzaman, Harun-or-Rashid, Sohail, Enamul Haque, and Noor Islam.

A total of 18 mobile phones were recovered from them.
