Cyclone Sitrang: 18 deaths reported across Bangladesh

The cyclonic storm Sitrang hit the coastal areas of Bangladesh Monday evening

As many as 18 deaths were reported from different parts of Bangladesh since Monday night as the cyclonic storm Sitrang completed its landfall and weakened to a tropical depression over Bangladesh in the early hours of Tuesday.

Comilla

Three members of a family died after a tree fell on their house in Comilla. 

The incident took place in Hesakhal Paschim Para of Hesakhal union of Nangalkot upazila on Monday night. 

The deceased are Nizam Uddin, his wife Sathi Akhtar, and daughter Liza Akhtar.

Nangalkot Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Raihan Mehbub said: “I have received information at around 11:30pm that three people died after a tree fell. The upazila administration and police went to the spot and carried out the rescue operations.”

Bhola

Four people died at sadar, Doulatkhan, Lalmohan, and Char Fasson being crushed under trees and from drowning.

The deceased were identified as Mofijul Islam, 60, from sadar upazila, Bibi Khadiza, 20, from Doulatkhan upazila, Rabeya, 30, from Lalmohan upazila, and Monir, 30 from Char Fasson upazila, said Delwar Hossain, district relief and rehabilitation officer.

Mofizul died after a tree fell on his house on Monday night at Dhania union in sadar upazila and  Bibi Khadiza also died being crushed under a tree. Monir was on a motorcycle when a tree branch fell, leaving him dead on the spot while Rabeya drowned.  

Narail

A woman named Morjina Begum, 40, died after a tree branch fell on him in Lohagara upazila of Narail under the influence of Cyclone Sitrang. 

The incident took place on Monday in the afternoon near Palli Accumik Bank of Upazila Parishad. 

Morjina Begum is the daughter of late Ayakub Ali Sheikh of Arjun Bahar village of Bagerhat Sadar Upazila.

Lohagara police station Office-in-Charge (OC) Nasir Uddin said that the police went to the upazila health complex after receiving the information. After that, the body was handed over to the relatives.

Lohagara Upazila Nirbahi Officer Azgar Ali said: "The deceased's only child is a student of a local madrasa. Soon the district administration will give him full support including financial grants from the government.

Barguna

An elderly woman named Amena Khatun died after a tree fell on her house in Sonakhali area of Barguna Sadar Upazila. 

Barguna Deputy Commissioner Habibur Rahman said that Amena Khatun was eating inside the house at 8pm on Monday when a tree fell on the house. She is more than 100 years old.

Chittagong

The body of a child was recovered from Kadmarsul Achoa Ship Breaking Yard of Bhatiari union of the upazila at 10:30am on Tuesday. 

Sitakunda Kumira Naval Police Outpost Sub Inspector (SI) Md Mahbub said that the child's body was recovered from the shipyard area with the help of volunteers from Gausia Committee. 

He said police suspect that the body was washed away in the tidal water after the cyclone hit. 

The body has been sent to Chittagong Medical College (CHMEC) Hospital Morgue for autopsy.

Sirajganj

A mother and her son died after a boat sank during the storm in Jamuna River in East Mohanpur area of Sirajganj Sadar upazila's Syedabad union. 

The incident took place around 9pm on Monday night.

The deceased are Ayesha Khatun, 28, wife of Khokon of East Mohanpur village, and their son Arafat Hossain, 2.

Dhaka

One rickshaw puller died after the railing of a multi-story building collapsed and fell on him on Monday night in Dhaka.

Hazaribagh police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sajjadur Rahman confirmed this information on Tuesday. 

He said that around 8:30pm, the railing of a building next to the Hazaribagh Mosque collapsed and fell down. A rickshaw driver was injured and died on the spot. His identity could not be confirmed.

Goplaganj

Two women died after a tree fell on them in Tungipara upazila of Gopalganj on Monday night.

The deceased were Sharmin Begum, 25, Rumisa Begum, 65, Tungipara police station Officer-in-Charge Abul Monsur said.

Patuakhali

The body of a worker named Nur Islam Molla, 38, who went missing during the storm in Patuakhali, has been recovered. 

On Tuesday morning, fire service members recovered the body from the Kheyaghat area of the Lohalia river.

On Monday at around 9pm, Nur Islam went missing after the trawler sank in Lohalia river.

Munshiganj

A mother and daughter died when a tree fell on the house in Kanksar village of Louhajang upazila of Munshiganj. 

Father and son of the same family were seriously injured in this incident as well. 

Louhajang police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdulla Al Taybir said that the incident took place around 11:30pm on Monday.

The bodies of the deceased Asma Begum Ashu, 28, and daughter Suraiya, 3, were recovered by the locals on Tuesday morning. 

Abdur Razzak, 35, and his son Arafat, 10, are being treated at hospital.
