Public health specialists stated during a webinar discussion on Sunday that poor eating habits increase the chances of hypertensive heart disease and fatalities among the people of Bangladesh.
On the occasion of World Food Day 2022, the research and advocacy organization PROGGA (Knowledge for Progress), with assistance from the Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI), hosted the webinar titled "Eating Habits, Hypertension and Heart Disease Risk and the Needful."
Sadia Galiba Prova, the coordinator for PROGGA, served as the webinar's moderator.
The risks of hypertension and heart disease can be decreased, according to experts, by avoiding foods high in saturated fat, trans fat, and salt.
"Foods having an excessive amount of trans fats raise the risk of hypertension," stated Professor Dr Md Abdul Alim, a member of the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority.
The government-passed trans fat restriction will go into effect in the allotted period, he further stated.
According to Dr Tahmina Sultana, Director of Primary Health Care and Integrated Thana Health Complex at the Director General of Health Services (DGHS): “Therapy for hypertension is currently offered in a few community clinics and will eventually be offered throughout the entire nation.”
Approximately 30% of preventable morbidity and mortality from noncommunicable illnesses, including morbidity and mortality from hypertension, are attributable to improper nutrition and physical inactivity, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The World Health Organization is attempting to reduce the incidence of the "silent killer" hypertension, according to Dr Farzana Akter Dorin, National Professional Officer, Policies for Prevention of NCDs, WHO, Bangladesh Office.
Shamsun Naher Nahid Mohua, Head of Nutrition at the Department of Diet and Nutrition of BIRDEM General Hospital, Dr S M Mustafa Zaman, Professor, Department of Cardiology at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Muhammad Ruhul Quddus, Bangladesh Country Lead of Global Health Advocacy Incubator, Bipul Biswas Apon, General Secretary, Bangladesh Food and Nutrition Association (BAFNA), ABM Zubair, Executive Director of PROGGA were also present at the webinar.
