Report: Murder, suicide after rape claim lives of 41 women in 9 months

At least 158 women were murdered by their husbands, claims Ain o Salish Kendra

At least 34 women were raped and killed while seven others committed suicide after being raped across Bangladesh in the last nine months until September 30 this year, according to the rights organization Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK).

Besides, around 734 women and children were subjected to rape, while 128 others became victims of attempted rape during the same period from January 1 to September 30 this year, according to statistics from ASK released on Thursday.

ASK recorded these statistics based on nine leading national dailies and its own sources.

The ASK data said that at least 158 women were murdered by their husbands due to domestic violence during the same period.

While, at least 395 children were killed, while 107 others were murdered after rape.

Meanwhile, the ASK report alleged that at least 15 people were killed by members of law enforcement agencies during this period.  

Three of them were allegedly killed in crossfire with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), one died due to torture after arrest by the RAB and another one died due to a heart attack in RAB’s custody.

On the other hand, the report also claimed that two people died from physical torture before being arrested by the police, four others were tortured to death, one allegedly committed suicide in police custody, and two others died of sickness, during the same period.

At least 58 people also died and 5,400 others were injured in 387 incidents of political violence across the country, the ASK report claimed.
