Three activists of a local unit of the Chhatra League died while being chased by a rival group after their motorcycle hit a parked truck on the Jhenaidah-Chuadanga road in Jhenaidah Sadar upazila late on Friday.
The deceased are Saidur Rahman Murad, 25, vice president of the student council of Jhenaidah Government Veterinary College, and students of the same college Touhidul Islam, 23, and Shamresh Kumar, 22, all of whom were activists of the student wing of the ruling Awami League.
Jhenaidah Sadar police station OC Sheikh Sohel Rana said he had heard about a factional clash of the Chhatra League in which a student of Jhenaidah Government Veterinary College had been stabbed.
“The three (Murad, Touhidul and Shamresh) were trying to flee the area after being chased by their rival group. They died on the spot when their motorcycle hit a truck as its rider had lost control of the vehicle.”
Sajibul Islam, general secretary of the college student council, said a rival group had long been trying to attack him.
He said he along with Murad and four others were returning to the college on two motorcycles when their rivals launched an attack with sharp weapons.
Sajibul said he had sustained stab injuries in the attack, adding that Murad and two others had tried to rush towards the college to escape the attack and that the attackers riding on around 10 motorcycles had chased them.
The police later rescued Sajibul and admitted him to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital.
Shamimul Islam, deputy assistant director of Jhenaidah Fire Service, said the agency had recovered the three bodies from the spot and sent them to the morgue of the local state-run hospital.
