By-polls to Sajeda Chowdhury’s seat on November 5

Last date of submission of nomination papers is October 10

The Election Commission on Monday declared the schedule for holding the by-polls to Faridpur-2 constituency, which fell vacant following the death of  senior Awami League leader and deputy leader in parliament Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury.

As per the schedule, voting in the constituency (Nagarkanda, Saltha, Sadarpur) will take place using Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) on November 5. 

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal presided over the meeting, held at the EC Secretariat in Agargaon.

The last date of submission of nomination paper is October 10, scrutiny on October 12 and withdrawal on October 19.

The Parliament Secretariat issued a notification declaring the seat vacant on September 11, the day Sajeda Chowdhury died while undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka. She had been admitted to the hospital with post-Covid-19 complications.

In 2019, she was elected member of the parliament from Faridpur-2 constituency  for the seventh time and elected deputy leader of the House for the third time.

Sajeda Chowdhury, a presidium member of the ruling Awami League, was Sheikh Hasina’s long-time companion in street movements. She received the Independence Award in 2010. She was the founding director of Kolkata Gobra Nursing Camp during the Liberation War.

Born in a respected Muslim family in Magura in 1935, Sajeda Chowdhury joined the Awami League in 1956. She served as the founding general secretary of Mohila Awami League from 1969 to 1975.

The veteran politician also served as the acting general secretary of the Awami League.

Apart from politics, she also engaged herself in social work and contributed to the development of sports, cultural and religious institutions.
