A young man named Rana Mia, 30, was reportedly beaten to death on suspicion of stealing in Sreepur of Gazipur.
The victim’s father, Amirul Islam filed a case on Sunday, Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Moniurzzaman confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
The accused in the case are five-six unidentified people including local scrap dealer Shipon Mia, 25, Akash Mia, 22, Ujjal Mia, 25, and Emon, 26.
The accused are on the run since the incident.
Amirul Isalm said that the main accused, Shipon deals in scrap goods. He owns 15 vans, out of which he sells secondhand goods in two vans and rents the rest.
Five vans were stolen from Shipon recently. Shipon and his men detained Rana on Saturday morning on the charge of stealing vans.
“They beat up Rana and he was forced to confess that he stole three vans. The locals requested them to let Rana go. But Rana was beaten in front of them,” he said.
“Rana, at one point, was released with a signature on the bond paper,” he added.
Upon receiving the news with the help of locals, Rana’s father took him to Sreepur Upazila Health Complex.
When his conditions deteriorated, he was taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
Doctors in Mymensingh Medical college advised to take Rana to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. When he was taken to DMCH, the doctor on duty declared Rana dead.
Rana’s father told the Dhaka Tribune: “I begged him to forgive my son but they did not let him go. They tortured him with false accusations and broke his ribs, arms and legs. They killed him. I came directly to police station with the body from the hospital hoping for justice.”
OC Md Moniruzzaman said police are trying to arrest the accused.
