Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) auctioned off construction materials that were illegally kept on roads and footpaths in Dhaka’s Mirpur area on Saturday.
While visiting the area for a dengue awareness campaign, DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam ordered the move after he noticed rods, bricks, sand and other construction materials on the roads
After not finding the authorities, the DNCC mayor ordered to take immediate legal action as the construction materials posed a safety risk to the public.
Executive Magistrate Parsia Sultana Priyanka, and other officials seized the materials and sold them for Tk18.45.
In this regard, the DNCC mayor said: "When we came to search for Aedes larvae in the area, we found rods, bricks, and other materials lying on road and pavement. Drains were also clogged due to sand, and hence there was water on the road.”
“No construction material should be left on the roads like this. All organizations will have to face consequences if they are found to disobey this rule,” he added.
A weeklong special drive to control the spread of dengue took place started from September 11.
The drive is being conducted by separate teams in every 10 zones under DNCC.
