Customs authorities start destroying containers of perishable items in Chittagong

All destroyed items are unsuitable and expired, according to the customs authorities

Customs authorities have started destroying 382 unusable and decaying containers in Chittagong port and several off-docks.

The operation began on Sunday in Chittagong City Corporation's dumping station in Halishahar's Anandabazar area, confirmed Mahfuz Alam, DCP of Chittagong Customs House.

He said that all items within these containers are unsuitable and expired. 

He added that the contents of are being destroyed in accordance with the decision of the destruction committee, which was formed on August 29. 

The committee was formed in accordance with the National Board of Revenue's standing regulations. 

“We want to destroy 25 to 30 product containers every day. The demolition will continue until September 26,” he said.

According to the customs house official, on September 8, the products of 63 containers were destroyed and the wrecked containers have been removed from the port premises, freeing up space. 

He said that destruction of unauctioned items is an ongoing operation. 

According to port sources, onion, ginger, apple, pomegranate, dragon fruits, orange, coriander, grapes, kalonji, frozen fish, boneless buffalo meat, wheat bran, fish feed, bulk grain, salt, garlic, sunflower oil, black horse drink, coffee and other perishable/biodegradable (decomposable) products are included in the shipments being destroyed.
