The High Court on Monday granted an eight-week anticipatory bail to the suspended Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) Mayor Jahangir Alam in a defamation case lodged against him in Faridpur over his demeaning remarks on Bangabandhu.

A high court division bench comprising of Justice Md Rezaul Hasan and Justice Md Atabullah passed the order on Monday.

On August 31, an arrest warrant was issued against him in Faridpur court, in a defamation case filed against him by Ataur Rahman, organizing secretary of Manobik Bangladesh Society.

Prior to that, he took anticipatory bails in seven among eight cases against him on August 22.

In September last year, videos of Jahangir making derogatory comments on Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the martyred freedom fighters of the liberation war at a programme went viral on social media.

In a meeting held on November 19 last year, the ruling Awami League expelled Alam from his position in the party over the incident.
