An activist of Jubo Dal, BNP's youth wing, was killed and 20 people were injured in a clash between police and the opposition party members in Narayanganj on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Shawon, 20.
Dhaka TribuneAnisur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sadar police station, said the BNP activists took out a procession around 10:45am, marking the founding anniversary of the party.
When the procession reached the No-2 rail gate area around 11:30am, police stopped them as they did not take prior permission from police, thus a chase and counter chase was triggered.
At one stage, the protesters attacked the cops, prompting the law enforcers to fire rubber bullets.
The whole Bangabandhu road from No-2 rail gate point turned into a battlefield during the clash that left 20 people injured.
Shawon and five others received bullet injuries during the clash. Shawon was taken to Narayanganj General Hospital, where the doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The injured have been transferred to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DHMC) for treatment.
The injured are - Md Badal Bhuiyan, 35, Nabir Hossain Navin, 30, Md Russell Pradhan, 30, Jewel Arman, 40 and Md Farooq, 30.
Narayanganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Golam Mostafa Russell said that the BNP's youth wing was trying to create chaos on the road by marching without prior permission. When police tried to remove them from the street, they started throwing bricks and cocktails at the police. The police also fired tear shells and rubber bullets in self-defense, he said.
“About 10-12 of our members were injured and are undergoing treatment in different hospitals,” the SP added.
