The High Court has issued a rule asking why the inaction of authorities in drafting a guideline for the welfare, safety, and protection of domestic help should not be declared illegal.
Eight people including the law minister and law secretary have been made respondents to the rule.
The bench of Justice KM Kamrul Kader and Justice Mohammad Ali issued the rule during the hearing of a petition on Sunday.
Advocate Fauzia Karim Feroze and Barrister Kazi Maruful Alam represented the petitioners.
“A protection and welfare policy for the domestic help was issued in 2015,” Maruful told Bangla Tribune.
“However, there were several ambiguities and limitations regarding their benefits and compensation,” he added.
Kazi Maruful Alam, who is the director of Foundation for Law and Development, had issued a letter to the authorities concerned, including the law ministry, asking for a detailed guideline.
He filed the petition after failing to receive a response.
