AC Land, 9 others injured in Sirajganj villagers’ attack

Local residents protested against Ashrayan project on the playground

Ten people including the assistant commissioner (Land) were injured as villagers and law enforcement agencies clashed during an inspection of work on an Ashrayan project at a playground in Shahjadpur of Sirajganj on Sunday afternoon.

Among the injured, Shahjadpur Assistant Commissioner (Land) Liakat Salman had been admitted to Shahjadpur Upazila Health Complex and a child named Suraiya Khatun to the 250 Bed Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital in Sirajganj.

The rest got treatment from local clinics.

According to the police and eyewitnesses, the people of Baldighar village of Kayempur union of Shahjadpur upazila have been using a government property as a playground for a long time. 

Recently, the upazila administration decided to build an Ashrayan project on the playground. The local residents protested against the project and had been holding human chain programs.

On Sunday afternoon, Shahjadpur upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Tariqul Islam and Assistant Commissioner (Land) Liakat Salman along with the officials of the upazila administration went to survey, inspect and fill the place designated for the project when the local residents blocked them, resulting in a clash.

Upazila health complex Resident Medical Officer Masud Rana said that the injuries of Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Liakat Salman were very serious. He received eight stitches on his head and was sent to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital for advanced treatment.

In this regard, Shahjadpur Police Officer-in-Charge Md Nazrul Islam said that the assistant commissioner was injured by bricks thrown by villagers.

Additional police are deployed at the scene to avert any further chaos, he added.
