The production at Barapukuria Coal Mine started in full swing in Dinajpur after resuming partial production on August 6.
Managing Director Saiful Islam Sarkar on Sunday afternoon said that 2,731 metric tons of coal was extracted on the first day itself.
He said: “Coal extraction started in one shift from 6pm on August 6. After completing the maintenance work, coal mining started in three shifts from Saturday morning.”
“293 Bangladeshis and 300 Chinese workers are working in three shifts. The number of workers will be increased further. As a result, it will be possible to extract 3,000-3,500 metric tons of coal every day,” he added.
According to coal mine sources, the mining of coal at Barapukuria was stopped on April 30 due to the depletion of reserves from phase number 1310.
The phase was later declared abandoned.
The authorities have started the process of coal extraction from phase number 1306 by shifting the usable equipment of the abandoned phase and installing new equipment.
Earlier, coal mining was started experimentally on the morning of July 27. In the meantime, some workers of the mine were diagnosed with Covid-19.
Later, the authorities stopped the mining again on August 1.
