The Awami League Presidium Member and Agriculture Minister Dr Md Abdur Razzaque on Saturday said the incumbent democratic government cannot be overthrown by any threat without national elections.
“The change of the incumbent government is possible only through holding national polls. This elected democratic government cannot be overthrown by any kind of threats without elections,” he told a National Mourning Day discussion in city .
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University organized the discussion, marking the National Mourning Day and 47th martyrdom anniversary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on its campus auditorium.
Abdur Razzaque added: “The elections to the next Jatiya Sangsad (parliament) will be held in December 2023 or January 2024. People are the source of our power. The Awami League wants to get elected again by people's vote to assume the office under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.”
Referring to issuing of threat by BNP, the Awami League leader said mass people did not forget the nightmare of launching antigovernment movement till date as they killed the innocent people by torching vehicles.
Noting that the damage and destruction occurred by the BNP across the country from 2001 to 2006, the Awami League minister said the BNP will never be able to come out of the grave in the way they had dug their own graves.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Sharfuddin Ahmed presided over the discussion.
Among others, Proctor Prof Md Habibur Rahman Dulal, Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad (Swachip) President Prof M Iqbal Arslan, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development) Prof Md Jahid Hossain, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Prof AKM Mosharraf Hossain, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Prof Dr Soyef Uddin Ahmed and Treasurer Prof Mohammad Atiqur Rahman also spoke there.
Later, they paid rich tributes to the Father of the Nation by placing wreaths at his (Bangabandhu) mural installed at the block B of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University.
