BNP questions role of Bhola SP over death of Swechchasebak Dal leader

36 police members were sued on Thursday

Update : 06 Aug 2022, 12:35 AM

BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Friday alleged that the police superintendent of Bhola, Mohammad Saiful Islam, had ordered stern action against demonstrators which resulted in the deaths of two party leaders.

From a press conference at the party’s Maya Paltan office, Rizvi claimed that the SP was a former Chhatra League leader and he directed the law enforcers to open fire to get a promotion.

On July 31, Abdur Rahim, member secretary of Dakkhin Dighaldi Union unit Swechchasebak Dal, died from bullet wounds when police opened fire to disperse the party activists during a demonstration at Kalinath Roy Bazar.

The protest was staged against the ongoing loadshedding and mismanagement in the power sector, as part of the party’s countrywide program.

His wife Khadiza Begum filed a case over the murder against 36 police members including the model police station OC, Md Arman Hossain, on Thursday.

Rizvi claimed that Abdur Rahim was shot down from a close range in a planned manner. It proves that the government wanted to cling to power by unleashing the law enforcers and ruling party men on the opposition.

Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal district unit President Nura Alam, who sustained injuries during the clash, died at a hospital in Dhaka on Wednesday.

On Thursday, the BNP enforced a daylong general strike in Bhola protesting the deaths but withdrew around 12pm.
