A seven-party political alliance, styled “Ganatantra Mancha”, is set to be launched on Monday.
“We hope that the political alliance is going to be launched on Monday,” President of Nagorik Oikya Mahmudur Rahman Manna told Dhaka Tribune on Friday.
The alliance consists of a faction of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Rob), Nagorik Oikya, Biplobi Workers Party, Gono Odhikar Parishad, Bhasani Onusari Parishad, Rastra Sangskar Andolon and Gonosamhati Andolon.
The parties have been in discussion among themselves and the BNP for months to reach a consensus and also staged demonstrations on the same issues separately.
Zonayed Saki, chief coordinator of Ganosamhati Andolon, said the platform’s goal was to establish a better governance system in Bangladesh and to give citizens the right to vote.
“Ganatantra Mancha also demands an election-time government,” he said at a press conference on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Gono Odhikar Parishad leaders sat with the BNP on Wednesday. Later, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said they reached a consensus on waging a simultaneous movement for ousting the current regime and ensuring the next polls under a neutral government.
Talking to reporters after the meeting, Fakhrul said: “We’re glad that they agreed with us on all issues, especially on not joining any polls under the current government.”
