The devastating floods in the northern region of the country left many homeless and destitute, with Sunamganj being one of the worst affected areas. In a bid to combat the issue, an Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) came up with the idea of building floating houses for the poor so that they do not have to face losing their homes when the rivers overflow.

On Monday, Biswamvarpur UNO Md Sadiur Rahim Jadid handed over the keys of one floating house to a poor farmer.

The devastating flood in the northern region of the country left many homeless and destitute with Sunamganj being one of the worst affected areas. In a bid to combat the issue, an Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) came up with the idea to build floating houses for the poor so that they do not have to face losing their homes when the rivers overflow.

The three-room house has been built on drums and floats on water. The UNO built it with private funding and it has been handed over to Samir Das, a farmer who was left landless and homeless after the floods.

The house has been built on a test basis and if the endeavor is successful, the administration will consider such houses for more locals in the area so that they are not left homeless after the floods.

“In the haor regions, people build small homes. When floods hit, they face many issues with their homes,” said UNO Jadid.

“Under these circumstances, a floating house has been built on a test basis,” he said, adding that a full project can be undertaken if it proves to be sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Farmer Samir Das, who had to take shelter in a school with a family of eight, says that he is delighted after receiving the house.
