The United States Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter D Haas paid a courtesy call to Rajshahi City Corporation Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton at the mayor’s office in Nagar Bhaban, Rajshahi on Monday.
During the meeting, the ambassador praised the clean and green city of Rajshahi.
Khairuzzaman Liton said: “We discussed bilateral relations between Bangladesh and the United States. They are checking the feasibility of expanding the scope of the American Centre in Rajshahi. The United States is cooperating with the Bangladesh Police in its training program. Overall, it was a very productive discussion,”
He told reporters after the meeting that he was grateful towards the envoy for the visit.
On the occasion, US Ambassador Peter Haas said: “I visited Rajshahi’s Sapura Silk, Metropolitan Police Office, Victim Support Centre, Cyber and Security Training Program, Barendra Research Museum, American Corner, among other places. Rajshahi is truly a beautiful, green and clean city. I was also impressed by the mayor’s hospitality.”
At the end of the meeting, the mayor handed over mementos and gifts to the US ambassador.
Earlier, Rajshahi City Corporation Chief Executive Officer Dr ABM Sharif Uddin greeted the US ambassador at the main gate of Nagar Bhaban. He was then welcomed with dance performance and colourful arrangements by child artistes.
Meanwhile, an American Centre Pop-Up programme was held at Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) on Monday afternoon aimed at connecting its students with the American Centre.
The American Embassy in Dhaka and American Corner jointly organized the programme in association with the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Institute of Information and Communication Technology of RUET.
RUET Vice-Chancellor Rafiqul Islam Sheikh, US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas and Mission Director of USAID, Bangladesh Kathryn Stevens addressed the programme.
